Alaska

Alaska is an adventurous traveller's dream destination. It is big and beautiful and offers exciting places and activities not found easily anywhere else. Its national parks, islands and snow-capped mountains are stunning. Although the climate is extremely variable, there are thrills and adventures that can be had any season.

Exploring Alaska demands time. It is a huge state after all and if you want to make the most of your visit stay at least a week to enjoy its lovely scenic spots. There are many ways to reach this state--by plane, car, boat, motorcoach or train.

There are five major airports in Alaska but visitors and almost all major international flights are served by the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. Direct flights from several West Coast cities are offered by Northwest, Delta and American Airlines. There are seasonal charter flights too offered by a handful of Asian airlines. July and August are peak tourist months so make sure that you book in advance to get hold of cheap flights. For lower airline ticket prices, go there either May or September when the weather is still mild and fewer tourists visit.

Many tourists consider Alaska as a major cruise destination. Best time for this activity is from April to September. Its rich wildlife, impressive tidewater glaciers and pulsating ports are its main attractions. Before embarking on an Alaskan cruise, decide whether you want a wildlife, glacier, sternwheeler or adventure type of cruise. Depending on your time and budget, you may opt to cruise for a day or more. Ride a catamaran, choose a custom vessel or go all-out in a grand ocean liner. The Alaska State Ferry offers economical options so check it out if you want to compare cruise rates. Day cruisers may also opt to traverse the Interior of Alaska through a riverboat ride along Tanana or Chena Rivers and get charmed with an Indian village, take a good look at Fairbanks, indulge in local food or visit an Athabascan fish camp.

Whatever it is that catches your fancy, your cruise adventure for sure will be a memorable one. Popular destinations for Alaska cruises are Prince William Sound, Kenai Fjords and Glacier Bay.
