Sitka

Sitka is a picturesque seaside community just south of Alaska's capital Juneau. It is one of the Inside Passage Communities and an interesting port of call for Alaska cruises. Characterised by mountainous terrain and surrounded by forested islands, this destination is an anticipated highlight of your Alaska cruise vacation.

Not all cruise liners go to Sitka though because it doesn't have a large dock. If you want to make sure you'll get the chance to spend time on this city, have a professional travel agency book you to an Alaskan cruise that include this port of call. One of the advantages of having a not-so-large dock is the city hardly gets overcrowded with gawking tourists and you'd be able to enjoy your trip better.

It is the largest US city by area but unlike the big cities in the country, Sitka retains its adventurous vibe offering more outdoor recreation than the usual modern amenities of big cities. Expect your cruise activities reach a notch higher as you get acquainted with this historic city. You can kayak, hike, swim or walk through its maintained trails. Being located in front of the Pacific Ocean makes the trip even sweeter.

Visit the St. Michael's Cathedral or the Russian Bishop's House (just half-mile away from the Sitka National Historical Park) to see some Russian elements in this city, Sitka being the first non-indigenous settlement established by the Russians in 1799. It is considered as the fairest city in the southeast and a cultural hub. Other points of interest are the Sitka Historical Museum, Pioneer Home, Swan Lake and Tongass National Forest.

Sitka has one airport, the Sitka Rocky Gutierrez Airport. Alaska Airlines offers flights to/from destinations such as Juneau, Ketchikan and Seattle/Tacoma. Take note though that Seattle/Tacoma flights are seasonal. If you prefer to fly to Sitka, book early to avoid hassles and delays. You can also get cheap flights if you look through numerous packages offered by airlines and cruise companies.

You may also travel to Sitka through ferry service offered by the Alaska Marine Highway System as well as floatplane and various cruise vessels services.
