Whittier

This scenic harbour town's history tells us that its former occupants didn't want it to be found. Up until today, it's not as accessible as most travel destinations but the secluded location is actually its charm. With snow-capped mountains and glorious landscape as backdrop, Whittier is worth the trip. Whether you're there for a day tour or just passing through for a cruise, Whittier has plenty of things to offer besides being an embarkation port, kayaking and fishing counting as top outdoor activities.

Whittier is one of departure ports for Alaska cruises. It is about 75 miles southeast of Anchorage, accessible through the Seward Highway and Whittier Access Road. The nearest airport is the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport which is Alaska's main international gateway. Book your flights early to grab cheap air tickets and avoid hassles during tourist season. Major US airlines have services to this destination and a few Asian airlines too but some are seasonal. Check out the schedules of American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and Alaska Airlines.

From Anchorage, it's best to pre-arrange your accommodation and land travel details because there aren't many lodging houses in Whittier especially when cruise season sets in which happens from May to September. There are buses, trains and car rental available but you need to double check scheduled travel times.

Alaska cruises are great for family vacationers, group travel and even for honeymooners. The experience is fantastic and you'll remember it for a long time. The day cruise itinerary usually includes wildlife watching (like whales, otters, harbour seals and more), visiting a salmon hatchery, feasting your eyes on tidewater glaciers at Harriman Fjord and enjoying the stunning waterfalls and vistas along the Prince William Sound. There is also a hearty seafood Alaskan lunch to complete the trip.

Whether you choose to ride a catamaran, luxurious tour boats or custom vessels, make sure to wear comfortable clothes and never forget your camera to capture the beauty of your summer cruise getaway.
